Abstract
The university serves as a dynamic platform to equip learners with the competencies needed for a rapidly changing world. Thus, becoming aware of the risk factors that negatively affect learners’ academic performance is a demand of the time, as creating comfortable learning zones is a prerequisite for achieving academic success. Thus, using a qualitative research method, this study analyzed the risk factors that English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners face daily. A total of 107 students from a public university in Bangladesh participated in this study. Data were collected through students’ write-ups. The thematic analysis of the students’ responses revealed multiple barriers related to academic, social, financial, and psychological issues. Based on the findings of the analyzed data and the review of literature, this study also suggests workable solutions, such as providing financial assistance, ensuring facilitative learning environments, raising awareness among parents, arranging motivational sessions to address psychological issues, etc.
